Vision for CF on Kubernetes

Krannich, Bernd

Hello everyone,

Over the past couple of months, we have heard questions from many of you about the future of Cloud Foundry on Kubernetes, and have been raising those questions amongst ourselves too.

During that time, we have been arriving at an initial proposal for a common way forward to present for discussion with all of you in the community. The result is the following document articulating our perspective, including the opportunities we see, the challenges with the status quo, and the refined direction we propose:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rG814raI5UfGUsF_Ycrr8hKQMo1RH9TRMxuvkgHSdLg/edit?usp=sharing

We invite everyone in the community to comment on it, and especially to give their feedback and criticism, with the goal of achieving a common vision for our whole community.

We hope that the document and the ensuing discussion will set an exciting direction for Cloud Foundry on Kubernetes for the entire Cloud Foundry ecosystem and beyond.

Thanks,

Jens Huesken (SAP), Richard Johnson (IBM), Emile Kfouri (VMware), Bernd Krannich (SAP), Eric Malm (VMware), Simon Moser (IBM)

Seeking Program Chair nominations for CF Summit

Chris Clark

Deadline for nominations is Friday April 16, 2021, at 11:59 PM PST.

Hi all! The dates for Cloud Foundry Summit have been announced, the CFP is open and we are now seeking nominations for program chairs for each of the Summit tracks.

The Track chairs will help curate a program that fosters collaboration among attendees and offers interactive platform education. Track chairs will help program content for the following:

  • “How To” Track: Developers guides for using Cloud Foundry with various languages/frameworks, demonstrations of new or advanced features of Cloud Foundry open source projects
  • “In the Wild” Track: Stories from out in the world of users, customers and systems integrators, including: talks from end users doing interesting things with Cloud Foundry, perspectives from the systems integrators and consultancies helping end users, unique customer stories from vendors
  • “Behind the Curtain” Track: Updates from Cloud Foundry project teams, road map reviews, feature proposal discussions and panels about the platform’s future

Responsibilities of Track chairs:

Each track will have two co-chairs who review the submissions to the CFP and select the content and flow best suited for their track and the community. The events team will manage all speaker logistics, communications, and publishing the schedule.

Benefits:

Each co-chair receives a conference pass to Cloud Foundry Summit.

FAQ

Here are a few questions that may come up as you consider nominating yourself or a peer. If you have a question that hasn’t been answered yet, please reach out in the #summit channel in Cloud Foundry Slack and tag @DebGiles.

  • What is the timeline for nominations?

Nominations open Tuesday, March 30 and will close on Friday, April 16. Voting will take place the following week and Track chairs will be announced on Monday, May 3, 2021.

  • What is the time commitment to be a Track chair?

Around 10-20 hours from July 6-8 for session reviews and schedule-building prior to Cloud Foundry Summit.

  • As a Track chair, can I submit a speaking proposal to other tracks or the track I’m chairing?

Yes. The proposals you submit to other tracks are treated the same way as any other submission. If you submit a proposal to a track you are chairing, the other co-chair will vote on your proposal.

  • How are the Track chairs selected?

Community members vote to elect co-chairs. The Foundation staff counts votes to select the final co-chairs for each track, keeping in mind employer diversity, co-chair willingness and making sure each individual is not a co-chair on more than one track.

Nominate today!

Re: phpPGAdmin

Daniel Jones

Hi Lukas,

The challenge you face is that the PostgreSQL instance that is visible in `cf services` may not be accessible directly from your workstation. It might not even be running in Cloud Foundry - CF doesn't actually know how to create a PostgreSQL instance, and instead asks a 'service broker' to create an instance.

Luckily the fine people at UK Government Digital Services made a CLI plugin that may help: https://github.com/alphagov/paas-cf-conduit

Presumably this tool connects from your workstation to an app instance, and then connects to the PostgreSQL instance from there. You should be able to use whatever client you like using this tunnel.

I'd invite you to think about the use case you have, and whether you really should be connecting to the database from your workstation. I can imagine it being useful for debugging, and I can also imagine it being dangerous in a production environment for security/privacy/stability reasons.

Re: phpPGAdmin

Chip Childers <cchilders@...>

Lukas,

The tools used to connect to various backing services (databases, cache clusters, etc...) are going to be specific to the service itself. The CF community doesn't work on anything like that. I'd suggest looking for help installing PostgreSQL management tools from the project / product that you are trying to install. Last resort: If you use a commercial distribution of Cloud Foundry, you might consider looking at their support options for help.

+1. Many thanks Shannon for your outstanding product leadership in key elements of the platform: first CF service API, then routing and finally networking.  Thanks also for your patience dealing with my [sometimes too?] enthusiastic product suggestions. I'll also long remember how you contributed to focus towards this unique CF user experience, selecting key use-cases from customer evidence, as well as avoiding "premature optimizations".

Looking back at the past years through design docs proposals , I realize how much I learned from you and the awesome individuals and teams that contributed to the broad CF community. It's amazing to see the ground covered by this community. I wish you the best for your next projects.

Guillaume.

Hi, everyone,

Shannon Coen, the lead for the Networking project within the Application Runtime PMC, has stepped down from the project, as he recently left VMware. We thank him for his extensive leadership in and service to the Cloud Foundry community since its earliest days.

The Networking team now has an opening for its project lead. Project leads must be nominated by a Cloud Foundry Foundation member. Please send nominations directly to me or in reply to this message no later than 11:59 PM PDT on Wednesday, April 7, 2021.

Also, if you have any questions about the role or the nomination process, as described in the CFF governance documents (https://www.cloudfoundry.org/governance/cff_development_operations_policy/), please let me know.

Thanks,
Eric Malm, CF Application Runtime PMC Lead
