Re: #cf Proposal to use modern and more efficient VM sizes on all IaaSes #cf

David Stevenson

This change has been successfully rolled out, we're saving 50-70% on our default deployments, yay! "bbl up" with newer bbl versions will change your default VM types catalog. If you run CATS, read on...

Newer versions of BBL starting with 8.4.91 will deploy more modern and efficient VM sizes by default. Along the way we encountered a problem where the default configuration is less reliable in passing CATS, which makes sense because there's a lot less hardware deployed. A change from CATS timeout_scale: 1 to timeout_scale: 2 fixes the issue and the CATS still pass when run in parallel with 12 nodes only about 25% slower (which is acceptable). We plan to fix CATS timeout defaults eventually such that this timeout scaling configuration option is not required.

Using the 1AZ cf-deployment ops-file, the CATS now will always fail when run in parallel due to the smaller standardized diego cell size. To work around this, BBL v8.4.93 standardizes the "medium" (4 cores, 16GB) and "large" (8 cores, 32GB) VM sizes and introduces a "medium-highmem" (4 cores, 32GB) size. These additional standard sizes give operators and CF authors additional sizes to choose from for diego cells, such as this newly introduced ops file designed to make parallel CATS testing fast+reliable in a single-AZ minimal configuration.

Hi Zac,

You should be able to join the Cloud Foundry Slack workspace here: https://slack.cloudfoundry.org/

Hope that helps - please let me know if you run into any issues.

Proposal for older stemcell removal to reduce hosting costs

Ruben Koster (VMware)

There is a proposal being discussed here: https://github.com/cloudfoundry/community/pull/308
to start cleaning up stemcells which are older than x year(s).

We would like your input in determining how long stemcells need to be kept around.

Thanks in advance,

#cf Proposal to use modern and more efficient VM sizes on all IaaSes #cf

David Stevenson

Hi CF community! I have a proposal to use modern & more efficient VM types on CF, more suitable for testing and CI workloads, and I'd love feedback on it:
https://github.com/cloudfoundry/community/pull/290

Some impacts to highlight, if this rolls out as-in:
  • New bbl up runs will switch to the new VM sizes automatically for CF-d, Jumpbox-D, and BOSH-d
    • Existing envs that do not re-run BBL up will not change
    • If you want the old machine sizes, you'll have to run an older bbl version or customize your cloud config yourself (we expect production instances of CF to tune their VM sizes anyway!)
  • A full CF/BOSH/Jumpbox deployment is about 70% cheaper! Using some IaaS commitments, you can now run a default deployment for ~$420/mo!
  • If you purchase Reserved/Committed Instances (and re-run bbl or create a new env), you'll end up using new VM types that might not be utilized
  • I've standardized the meaning of the handful VM types used in BOSH-D and CF-D, and tried to provide a similar amount of resources on all 3 IaaSes.
    • Azure used to be 56GB diego cells, GCP was 26GB 🙄
  • We'd end up using a lot of burstable VM types on GCP, AWS, and Azure. This is intentional and has been validated to work.
I've been trying to do infrastructure budgeting for running more CF testing and CI using CF Foundation GCP and AWS accounts, and I realized we need to reduce that spend before much of it could reasonably fit in the CFF budget. I'm going to move ahead with this sometime next week if there's no interesting feedback to address, so that we can do CFF IT budgeting effectively.

Thanks!

Re: Call for Nominations: 2022 Cloud Foundry TOC Election

Chris Clark

Hi all,

Just a reminder to get in any nominations for TOC candidates before next Thursday, June 2.

And, one procedural update: we'll be using Elekto to handle the voting process this year, in place of the methods we used last year. This should yield a cleaner, simpler process, and voters will be able to authenticate using their GitHub ID.  We'll have more detailed instructions on this once voting begins next Thursday.

Call for Nominations: 2022 Cloud Foundry TOC Election

Chris Clark <cclark@...>

Call for Nominations: Cloud Foundry Technical Oversight Committee.

Last June, the inaugural Cloud Foundry TOC was elected. We’re now ready to elect three new members to this committee. To recap, last year, two TOC members were elected to two-year terms, and three were elected to one-year terms, with the understanding that moving forward, all TOC terms will be for two years. Of the initial five TOC members, Eric Malm (VMware), and Stephan Merker (SAP), will now continue on for a second year, and the remaining three seats will be determined by this election.

Special thanks to our inaugural TOC! That would be Stephan, Eric, David Stevenson (VMware), Jan von Löwenstein (SAP), and TOC lead Lee Porte (Cloud.UK). Adopting a new system of government rarely goes as smoothly as this went, and a lot has been accomplished in the last year. Huzzah.

Please note: only two representatives from a given company are eligible to serve on the TOC at one time. So, no more than one candidate each from SAP and VMware are eligible to win a seat during this election, and no entity can elect more than two representatives.

Instructions for Nominating:

Nominate someone for the TOC by submitting a GitHub Issue using this template. Nominations must be submitted by June 2nd. Feel free to nominate a colleague (asking them first is recommended), or yourself.

Election Timeline:

  • May 18 - Announcement of Election and Call for Nominations

  • May 18 through June 2 - Candidate Nomination Period

  • June 2 - Election Begins via email ballots

  • June 17 - Election Close

  • June 22 - Results Announced

  • June 28 - First TOC meeting with new members

Eligible Voters:

Any individual who has contributed to CFF projects or technical working groups in the 12 months prior to the election is eligible to vote in the TOC election. Next week, a list of eligible voters will be published. If anyone feels like they have not been included in that list, but should have been, please submit an issue using this template. On June 2, email ballots will be sent to all voters on the list. Likewise, if you do not receive an email, but are on the list,  please submit an issue using the above template.

For any additional questions, please see the 2022 Voting Guide or reach out directly.

Hey CF community!

The CAB call scheduled for today has been moved to May 25th 2022 (at the same time). This is owing to a scheduling conflict, and also because a lot of folks will be paying attention to KubeCon EU.

We have a great agenda lined up for next week. So, please remember to to tune in to the call next week.

See y'all then!

Hello everyone,

🎉  This is a (slightly belated) announcement about a platform enabled way to do encrypted container-to-container (c2c) networking.

🔐  As of diego release 2.59.0 and cf-deployment 18.0.0, there is now a new container port exposed to allow encrypted container-to-container networking. To take advantage of this feature you will need to connect to port 61443 when doing c2c.

CAB call, March 16 2022

Ram Iyengar

Hello!

Update about the Cloud Foundry CAB call to be held on Wednesday, March 16th –

We will be hosting Onno Brouwer and the conversation will be centered around Open Service Broker API.

What is the discussion scheduled to be?

Onno and their team are using Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes along with OSBAPI. The Service Brokers allow their developers make use of services outside these platforms. Their (impressive) lineup of brokers include Concourse provisioning, Sharepoint connectors, PostgreSQL integrations, etc. They have a lot of success and the project itself is a wonderful technical accomplishment. Onno also has some questions that he would like to air freely. These include – activity around OSBAPI, alternatives, and others.

Who is Onno?

Onno is a senior advisor at Rijkswaterstaat in The Netherlands, where he operates their cloud native platforms since December 2015. Onno has over 25 years of software engineering experience, designing and building software in various languages and environments. His current interest cloud native applications architecture and design. Onno is an experienced speaker, and has presented internal workshops and trainings for topics such as Cloud Foundry, networking, traffic analysis, and security. Onno also held talks at past Cloud Foundry summits in Basel and The Hague, KubeCon, etc.

The community calls are a great way to keep up with what's happening in the Cloud Foundry community. The success of the call is tied closely to the support we get in the form of participation. It would help greatly if you can take part in the discussions that happen.

Also note - due to Daylight savings, clocks have moved back by an hour for some. Please consult the Community Calendar for the accurate slot.
