CF Application Runtime PMC: CAPI and CLI Project Leads Call for Nominations

Eric Malm

Hi, everyone,

Zach Robinson, the lead for both the CAPI and the CLI projects within the Application Runtime PMC, has stepped down from the projects, as he is taking on other projects inside of VMware. We thank him for his many years of leadership and service to the Cloud Foundry community.

The CAPI and CLI teams now each have an opening for their project leads. Project leads must be nominated by a Cloud Foundry Foundation member. Please send nominations directly to me or in reply to this message no later than 11:59 PM PDT on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

Also, if you have any questions about the role or the nomination process, as described in the CFF governance documents (https://www.cloudfoundry.org/governance/cff_development_operations_policy/), please let me know.

Thanks,
Eric Malm, CF Application Runtime PMC Lead

Seeking Program Chair nominations for CF Summit

Chris Clark

Deadline for nominations is Friday April 16, 2021, at 11:59 PM PST.

Hi all! The dates for Cloud Foundry Summit have been announced, the CFP is open and we are now seeking nominations for program chairs for each of the Summit tracks.

The Track chairs will help curate a program that fosters collaboration among attendees and offers interactive platform education. Track chairs will help program content for the following:

  • “How To” Track: Developers guides for using Cloud Foundry with various languages/frameworks, demonstrations of new or advanced features of Cloud Foundry open source projects
  • “In the Wild” Track: Stories from out in the world of users, customers and systems integrators, including: talks from end users doing interesting things with Cloud Foundry, perspectives from the systems integrators and consultancies helping end users, unique customer stories from vendors
  • “Behind the Curtain” Track: Updates from Cloud Foundry project teams, road map reviews, feature proposal discussions and panels about the platform’s future

Responsibilities of Track chairs:

Each track will have two co-chairs who review the submissions to the CFP and select the content and flow best suited for their track and the community. The events team will manage all speaker logistics, communications, and publishing the schedule.

Benefits:

Each co-chair receives a conference pass to Cloud Foundry Summit.

FAQ

Here are a few questions that may come up as you consider nominating yourself or a peer. If you have a question that hasn’t been answered yet, please reach out in the #summit channel in Cloud Foundry Slack and tag @DebGiles.

  • What is the timeline for nominations?

Nominations open Tuesday, March 30 and will close on Friday, April 16. Voting will take place the following week and Track chairs will be announced on Monday, May 3, 2021.

  • What is the time commitment to be a Track chair?

Around 10-20 hours from July 6-8 for session reviews and schedule-building prior to Cloud Foundry Summit.

  • As a Track chair, can I submit a speaking proposal to other tracks or the track I’m chairing?

Yes. The proposals you submit to other tracks are treated the same way as any other submission. If you submit a proposal to a track you are chairing, the other co-chair will vote on your proposal.

  • How are the Track chairs selected?

Community members vote to elect co-chairs. The Foundation staff counts votes to select the final co-chairs for each track, keeping in mind employer diversity, co-chair willingness and making sure each individual is not a co-chair on more than one track.

Nominate today!

Re: phpPGAdmin

Daniel Jones

Hi Lukas,

The challenge you face is that the PostgreSQL instance that is visible in `cf services` may not be accessible directly from your workstation. It might not even be running in Cloud Foundry - CF doesn't actually know how to create a PostgreSQL instance, and instead asks a 'service broker' to create an instance.

Luckily the fine people at UK Government Digital Services made a CLI plugin that may help: https://github.com/alphagov/paas-cf-conduit

Presumably this tool connects from your workstation to an app instance, and then connects to the PostgreSQL instance from there. You should be able to use whatever client you like using this tunnel.

I'd invite you to think about the use case you have, and whether you really should be connecting to the database from your workstation. I can imagine it being useful for debugging, and I can also imagine it being dangerous in a production environment for security/privacy/stability reasons.

Lukas,

The tools used to connect to various backing services (databases, cache clusters, etc...) are going to be specific to the service itself. The CF community doesn't work on anything like that. I'd suggest looking for help installing PostgreSQL management tools from the project / product that you are trying to install. Last resort: If you use a commercial distribution of Cloud Foundry, you might consider looking at their support options for help.

+1. Many thanks Shannon for your outstanding product leadership in key elements of the platform: first CF service API, then routing and finally networking.  Thanks also for your patience dealing with my [sometimes too?] enthusiastic product suggestions. I'll also long remember how you contributed to focus towards this unique CF user experience, selecting key use-cases from customer evidence, as well as avoiding "premature optimizations".

Looking back at the past years through design docs proposals , I realize how much I learned from you and the awesome individuals and teams that contributed to the broad CF community. It's amazing to see the ground covered by this community. I wish you the best for your next projects.

Guillaume.

Hi,
Try explicitly setting CF_HOME variable to a folder in your c or some other drive. All cf related files will be then saved in this folder.
Ex:
mkdir c:\cfhome
set CF_HOME=c:\cfhome

Hi, everyone,

VMware is nominating Amelia Downs for the Networking Project Lead in the Application Runtime PMC.

Amelia has been a core contributor to Cloud Foundry since 2016.  She joined the Container Networking team in Nov 2017, which then merged with the Routing team in Jan 2019. She still works as an engineer in those domains today. Prior to that she worked on CAPI and Diego. She was a track co-chair for both 2020 CF Summits and is looking forward to seeing everyone in person again.

Thanks,
Eric Malm

Update regarding Bionic Stemcells

Marco Voelz

Dear Cloud Foundry community,

TL;DR: Bionic stemcells are on their way to GA. Xenial stemcells in open-source will not receive security updates after the end of April 2021. Act now and test your bosh releases and plan for migrating your systems, we’re doing it as well. Read on for context, open issues and migration caveats.

Context:

As part of an earlier mail to the cf-bosh and cf-dev mailing lists, there was an announcement around work to create a BOSH stemcell for Ubuntu 18.04 (code-named “Bionic Beaver”). The background is that Ubuntu 16.04 (code-named “Xenial Xerus”) runs out of standard support by the end of April 2021. We are already publishing beta versions of Bionic stemcells on bosh.io.

As announced earlier, VMware decided to continue to support Xenial-based stemcells for their commercial distribution and is therefore transferring all open-source stemcell related work to the community – a team currently staffed by IBM and SAP. We’re stepping in to ensure that there will be a continuously maintained Bionic stemcell available for the open-source community.

What does this mean for you as users of open-source Cloud Foundry?

  • You need to plan for switching to Bionic stemcells before the end of April 2021. Xenial stemcells will not get any security related updates after this date!
  • Test your bosh-releases! We found a few things that needed to be changed in existing releases to make them ready for Bionic – you should do the same
  • You will get a continuously maintained Bionic stemcell, for which Canonical offers standard support until the end of April 2023

What is the current state?

How do you migrate from Xenial to Bionic?

  • Upload the new stemcell to your BOSH director in addition to the existing Xenial stemcell
  • Add the new stemcell to your cloud-config
  • Update your runtime-config in case you’re using the stemcell key in the placement rules to ensure addons are installed on the new stemcell as well
  • Switch the referenced stemcell for each deployment manifest and re-deploy
  • Deploy bosh itself with the new stemcell. If you’re using bosh-deployment, there are cpi-specific ops-files for this available

How can you help?

There are a number of ways you can get involved:

  • Depending on your configuration of Cloud Foundry, the open issues listed above might be blockers for you or not. Please help us prioritizing this with the teams if your migration to Bionic is blocked by any of these issues by commenting on the issue – except for the garden-runc issue, I’m not aware of any work on resolving them right now
  • Test your bosh-releases and provide feedback on things that work or don’t. Please note: the fact that you’re finding things we didn’t find in our tests most likely means that we’re requiring contributions from your side to successfully fix things
  • Scanning of stemcells (nessus, malware, etc) is something which quite often comes up in certifications. Setting this up in the open-source community would benefit everyone to check some boxes without investing in their own setup. Any help with getting this done in the community is highly appreciated!

Feedback?

Please reply to this mail on the list and/or send us a message in #bosh on Cloud Foundry slack. Don’t hesitate to DM me or send me a mail if you want to reach out privately.

Thanks in advance,

Marco

Re: Community interest in osb-cmdb ?

Guillaume Berche

Thanks Benjamin for your interest in this talk and the ideas shared around extended use-cases around CF marketplace!

Regarding the CF-as-IAM use-case, your understanding is correct, the idea is to periodically schedule a `cf update service` API call for every cloud subscription nested within a project subscription, when the latter may have some changes in their member list. This could potentially be osb-cmdb that supports broker opt-ins to receive the scheduled api calls. See placeholder describing this potential feature at https://github.com/orange-cloudfoundry/osb-cmdb/issues/105

Regards,

Guillaume.

Hi Guillaume,

I’ve just finished watching the video playback of the February Community Advisory Board and I’m impressed how creative you guys have been in terms of re-using existing components for new use-cases.

Using an existing cloud controller as a meta service broker, just adding a mere shim in front in order to convert incoming OSB API call to CF API calls, that’s… brilliant.

The 2nd CF-as-IAM solution is very creative either. Leveraging the CF Terraform provider into a Brokerpack for the new Cloud Broker… just blew my mind.
One feedback though, is about off-boardiing. In many companies, revoking authorizations when people go away is harder that granting them in the first place. This arises for many reasons, mostly non-technical. Here with CF-as-IAM, when you update the teammates list in your team CF space, that act as a template to provision authorisations on remote foundations, how do you enforce the new authorizations to the remote foundation ? Maybe you already push those with a `cf update service` API call, but as you didn’t mention this in your talk, I was curious.

Anyway, congrats for those creative experiments around OSB API, and ways to manage complexity in large scale organisations, when provisioning large numbers of CF foundations.

Benjamin
