Re: Proposal: Add support for SUSE stack and stemcells

Hi Jeff,

cool stuff. Good to here you bring in that aspect into the community. For
me that sounds like the nearly same pattern as with bosh, we talked about
at OS Summit in Boston. There are some points in the Cloud Foundry platform
where it is to strong coupled to a special workflow. So your input and even
more the open discussion you started seems more than beneficial for the
ecosystem to me. Will definitely have a look at it and leave my comments in
the document.

Hi Jeff,

This is indeed exciting. With our large set of on prem software
installations running on more “Enterprisy” Linux distros offering a SUSE
stemcell opens up a couple of opportunities. While I can’t promise that
we’ll actually use this option it’s a prerequisite for us to have a major
vendor like SUSE behind such an effort to even start discussing.

In the past, we have seen some “no-nos” in major BOSH releases (like
installing a Debian package for the single VM Postgres in cf-release [I
know, I know, single VM Postgres’es are anyhow considered development
only]). I hope this move and the testing you are suggesting encourages
people to look into alternatives of getting their software deployed inside
a BOSH release.

P.S.: Needless to say, we are anyhow working very closely with you guys in
the context of the joint OpenStack CPI work and related Dojo. So, there
will be opportunities to further discuss the topic.

Exciting stuff. In particular, getting an OS vendor involved in the
upstream seems like a really good move for the community overall. :)

Hi CF devs,

SUSE would like to present a proposal to add support for SUSE Linux as a
stack and stemcell option, alongside the current Ubuntu base.

The intent is to allow SUSE Linux as a certified and supported variant,
but not replace Ubuntu. Much of this was already technically possible with
clean separations currently in place.

We have undergone a spike internally to determine feasibility, through to
fully working openSUSE stemcell and stack that passes CATs and BATs. We
have prepared a document[1] which discusses the intentions and the work
involved to get there.

We believe this can be supported in an ongoing manner and are willing to
provide the resources to do this. We have had an initial discussion with
Chip, Mike and Onsi to ensure the basic premise was workable and we’d done
enough initial experimentations. Now we wanted to present this proposed
idea for open discussion here.

The next steps are (1) this community discussion on the proposal and (2) a
follow-on spike with current upstream contributors who have experience over
the current CF build system and buildpacks to flesh out potential unknown
unknowns in supporting an alternative stack and stem.

Please feel free to give your thoughts in this thread and/or comment in
the attached document.
