Brian, We do need systemd if we are going to use ubuntu so ubuntu 15.10 or 16.04 is required in our case. btw, do you have any documentation or advice on creating custom stemcells? --Firas

Hi Michael, The VM has 8 gb so this might be the problem. I am increasing memory to 24 gb and will update this thread if the issue is resolved. I may go eventually with 16.04 if I get to a point

Hi Firas, maybe the VM runs out of memory during the build step and starts swapping heavily? You should be able to see disk activity in AWS console - instance monitoring. If this is so, a simple fix
